Monte da Japonica Shadows in the Grass

OUR
LOCATION

Monte da Japónica is located in the foothills

Serra d’Ossa a small mountain range in the southern plains of the Alentejo region. It is home to a unique eco-system based on cork forests with exceptional flora and fauna.

ON-SITE ACTIVITIES

Guests can, of course, stay in their bucolic accommodation and rest by the pool or next to the fireplace with a book. However, we strongly recommend taking a walk through the cork forest along numerous trails that offer unrivalled vistas.

EXPLORE NEARBY

There are numerous local castle towns ripe for exploring.  Estremoz is known for its Saturday morning market as well as the newly-opened Berardo tile museum. Or the regional capital Evora with its Roman Temple of Diana.

Having your own car is highly recommended. That will allow you to explore numerous local sights including towns such as Evora, Vila Viçosa, Borba, Alandroal and Terena, not to mention our very own Redondo, known for its local hand-painted pottery industry.

THE NIGHT SKY

The Milky Way is clearly visible most nights

Guests can, of course, stay in their bucolic accommodation and rest by the pool or next to the fireplace with a book. However, we strongly recommend taking a walk through the cork forest along numerous trails that offer unrivalled vistas. The night sky is as clear as the air is pure: you should spend an hour or two marvelling at the night sky counting meteorites and learning to distinguish planets from stars.

EXPLORE SERRA D'OSSA

Walk along the wooden walkways

While walking in the forest you are as likely to come across wild boar as bumping into the local shepherd and his flock.  There are numerous local castle towns ripe for exploring.  Estremoz is known for its Saturday morning market as well as the newly-opened Berardo tile museum.  The royal palace at Vila Viçosa and the medieval castle deserve a full day’s visit as does the regional capital Evora with its Roman Temple of Diana and its windy streets of whitewashed houses.
